One Win Erases the Bitter Failures of the Past

Sunday Times 1st August 2021 Sudoku Completed

Today's Sudoku in the Sunday Times comics section is no different from all other Sunday Times puzzles of weeks and years past. The only difference is the way I feel after attempting the puzzle today and clearing it without any delay, trip ups or brain fog. The fact of the matter was that the last 3 weeks' Sudoku I had made careless mistakes and ending up with an error which was very difficult to erase, as I normally write my answers in pen and once the pen is put to paper, the so called answer stays. Hence, it is with much satisfaction that I managed to clear it on the first try and in good time too.

It is the same in business, if you try in business, you will likely fail and lose money over 90 % of the time. Hence, you need to have thick skin, be very cognizant of your weaknesses and either pull out, close down, persist with smaller overheads, merge, or persevere with steps taken to avoid the same pitfalls made in the past.
Hopefully, you can recoup the capital you invested, else go and try something else or find gainful employment. This is so much easier said than it is done.

COVID-19 has been and will be the death of many traditional businesses who had never envisaged that they would go bust. The food and beverage business, where many restaurants had invested hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of dollars in renovations, rentals, wages, goodwill etc etc has seen many foreclosures which were stalled by a once in a lifetime event.

We need to stay vigilant in life, wear a mask when in confined spaces, get vaccinated, not go to crowded places or stadia for a long while yet, change our travel for business and leisure indefinately - the list goes on and on and is so confusing all the time. It can and is overwhelming for the majority of people who have suffered for a period of close to 2 years  with no end in sight.

We badly need a 'win' in our lives.

Hence, like my little victory in the hard to complete Sunday Times Sudoku today, I will savour it and enjoy the moment.

Then its back to the 'new normal'.

Carpe Diem.

My thoughts after a 5 KM run this morning.

Let me put my thoughts in a simple writeup in this post. 31st July. I had planned after taking a break from my lifelong hobby of running to start afresh this morning. No expectations, no speed, no push no nothing. I am after all, one year shy of entering the third age - assuming I live (some hope but never achieved by many) till 90.

So this morning, I laced up my Kayanos, and went out the gate for a slow recovery run. I am cognizant that I have clocked thousands of kilometers before this day, and have completed 10 full marathons, 10 half marathons and numerous fun runs.

No expectations, except a satisfying run.

Now, after about 40 minutes, I have finished it, and have had a leisurely read of the mornings Straight Times (yes they are biased), have taken my cold shower and I am penning my thoughts.

I have realised that life is indeed transient, and that whatever we do or accomplish we must have a goal to serve a higher purpose or God. That in itself gives our lives meaning and a sense of worth.

To work so hard to  make money for our own enjoyment is somewhat shallow and selfish.

Hence, it is no wonder all these successful businesspeople and entrepreneurs eventually become philantropists. They want to give back and have an altruistic purpose. Some start very early on - by being generous, giving their time, talents and money to the less fortunate or the ones who have had bad circumstances befall them through no fault of their own.

For the love of money is the root of all evil.

To earn a decent living is what most of us, say 99% of the population aspire to achieve in their lifetime. Those that exceed and become ultrawealthy then question their existence - at some point in their lives.

And hence they give back.

In their time, in their donations and their expertise.

I believe that as I am at the cusp of the third age, I am preparing myself for this truly challenging and hopefully life defining task.

I seek to define how I want to 'give back', hopefully I can lay it plain and simple in the next post.

Singaporeans can be so shallow at times.

I read with disgust, how some Singaporeans have been reacting to our Olympians at the current Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Some of the TikTok and Facebook comments on the performances of Ms. Yu Meng Gu (table-tennis) and Joseph Schooling have made me rather ashamed of my countrymen.

My point is this, when we win the medals in table-tennis, the foreign talents are berated and people call them 'foreign imports' and not Singapore born. The years and years of training, sacrifice, toil, sweat and labour for many hours, days, months and years under disciplined and regimental coaches all come to fruition when the performances are their on display.

Yet,there are sour grapes from some quarters of Singaporeans. These people really need to check where their loyalties lie.

For the Olympic gold medallist Joseph Schooling to bow out, last in his heat and with an abysmal time, well, I can say, good job son, you tried your best but at least you put Singapore on the map once in Rio 2016 with that amazing victory snatching gold just 5 years ago.

He should reflect on what happened all these 4 years. He is a nice well rounded young man.

Heros fade away just as quickly as new ones are made.

To the happy clappers who only want medals and sit in their gaming chairs and sofas, or beds and complain about his poor performance.

Shame on You.

Get a Life.

if you were any good, you would be up there representing your swim club or school let alone the National Team.

Go hide under that miserable rock or gaming chair where your alternate world exists and your keyboard is your only connection with the outside world.

Adama Traore - Blinding speed, strength, amazing skill and unselfishness ; a phenomenal player

This player is THE player of the moment, Adama Traore, who (if he is still in the squad) will be having his 4th season at Wolves. He is targetted by a number of top teams including Liverpool amongst others.

His pace is amazing, his strength second to none, and his ability to cross ot hammer the ball home at the back of the net makes him a really top class player wanted by all the best teams in the world. Truth be told, he CAN achieve great things with the Wolves with his strike partner Raul Jiminez back in action and he will pose plenty of problems to many a Premier League team.

Mark my words

Adama, stay one more season please, show the world with Wolves what you can achieve.

Together with Raul Jiminez, you form the apex of the winger - striker combination which can beat ANY team in the Premier League 2021 - 22.

Give the show to your fans Adama !

We want you still at Molineux !

My son starts his journey in the working world today 26th July 2021

Monday July 26th 2021 ; 8.10 am

Today marks a Milestone for us as parents, our first born, Noel, has started his career in the working world.

He starts today as a Procurement Officer in a rather large company based in the Jurong East area.

We pray and hope that he can manage this transition from young man to become what he truly aspires to be.

It is a truly exciting time for him and a proud moment for us as we watch this next stage of his life with pride and happiness.

                            Dec 6th 2003 Hannah (my niece's) Birthday

My parents (Geoffrey and  Anna) would have loved to see this day, probably they are celebrating his independence in another world and this first step into the brave new world is a joyous occasion for my wife May and me.

Carpe Diem !

Musings on a Hot July Afternoon ; 25th July 2021

My Japanese Palm Tree taken one year ago 19th July 2020

Sunday 25th July 2021. We are into the second year of the COVID - 19 endemic with the world still reeling from the effects of yet another variant (the Delta) and the fallout from the people catching it is indeed frightening. The politics of COVID is still being played out with the West accusing China of starting the pandemic and China rebutting about the origins and pushing back.

Fortunately, in Singapore, life goes on almost normally. Albeit with masks on when we go out, nothing else has changed much. We are still one united people and many establishments such as Food and Beverage, Travel, Retail and even Air Travel are reeling with record losses in 2 unforgettable years of mayhem and disaster.

The silver lining is that Singapore with its well managed Government, has kept the numbers of cases down ; though there is the lingering distaste that the 2HA partial lockdown has again made many people frustrated of not being able to meet and dine in public for another month.

Its the price we pay for the spike in numbers, until we get to the so-called 'herd immunity' 70% number.

I too have my own frustrations of how the vaccination has affected me.

On 7th April, I booked my first jab at the Hong Kah North CC at 4pm. At 3.45 pm I was there and went through the procedures like briefing of what not to do and to do after the vaccination.

Everything went smoothly at 4.00 pm. After 30 minutes of sitting it out (the medical authorities needed to see if anybody had severe side effects after the vaccine), we could go home and I dutifully did.

The next few days were uneventful. On the 6th day, I was hosting a lunch with my ex-lecturer and after that sashimi lunch, both my staff and I felt a little unwell and I needed to go to the bathroom. I thought nothing of it, perhaps too much raw food and continued as normally as I could

The next morning, I came down with a bad rash which started on my legs. It was itching like crazy and soon it went to my body and arms. After sending my wife off to work, I went straight to the GP who diagnosed it to be a case of 'hives'.

I was given a dose of anti-histamine (steroids) and some cream. Not content with that, I also went to TTSH A and E for another opinion, and the result was " adverse reaction to the Moderna vaccine".

So, I was exempted from taking the second mRNA vaccine in May.

Thankfully after 3 days, I was fully recovered and continued as if nothing had happened.

My followup appointment  with the National Skin Centre was quick and the doctor there assured me that it would be wise to wait till the Ministry of Health formally advocates another vaccine jab to be taken 'somewhere down the road'.

Well in July I received my notice and I will take my first Vaccine Jab (Sinovac) by early August.

Am I happy ? No.

My thinking is this.

The Sinovac vaccine has an efficacy of 57% or so. Far less than the other mRNA vaccines.
However, the national MOH wants me to go for it so that I can be 'fully vaccinated' and I would be able to have some 'vaccine certificate' on my phone.

However, the frustrating thing is that the Sinovac vaccine is a Private company, and apparently many of their success in controlling the virus is still not proven.

So my question to MOH os Singapore is this : Why offer me this 'solution' ?

1. It is only partially effective in mitigating the effects of the COVID - 19

2. It is not recognised by many countries ; especially in Middle East where I am scheduled to visit once most of the world gets 'Herd Immunity"

This to me is highly unsatisfactory and surely there can be a better offering to someone like me who is still relatively young, healthy and in the prime of his business career.

Come on MOH
